From First Prototype to flowroute: What Comes Next?
Our early prototype is working well for drivers, but what's the next step? Naming decisions, market questions, and how we're validating real demand.
The first fully functional prototype is up and running — and it feels surprisingly good.
Right now, it's focused exclusively on drivers. Why? Because cars are still the biggest contributor to daily traffic congestion in most cities. Too many vehicles on the road at the same time creates those frustrating waves we all know too well.
But here's an interesting question that keeps coming up: Would fewer cars automatically mean less traffic? The answer turns out to be more nuanced than it seems, depending on who you ask and which perspective you take.
For now, though, the focus is clear: help drivers escape the worst of it by leaving at the smartest possible time.
Naming the Project
Originally, I wanted to call it When2Go. It felt straightforward and descriptive.
But when I looked at it through an SEO and Google-search lens, the name didn't hold up. It didn't clearly communicate what the app actually does, which would make it much harder for people to find when they need it.
That's when I turned to AI for naming suggestions. One recommendation stood out: flowroute.
It clicked immediately. "Flow" captures the idea of smoother traffic movement, while "route" keeps the focus on getting from A to B efficiently. The name feels modern, memorable, and descriptive enough to help with discoverability. After some thought, I made the switch — and I'm glad I did.
The Big Question: What Comes Next?
With a working prototype in hand, the natural next step was thinking about building a proper mobile app for iOS.
But then the doubts started creeping in:
- Is there even real demand for this?
- Has anyone tried building something similar before?
- If so, why didn't it take off?
- Or has no one really attempted it yet?
After researching existing apps, I couldn't find anything that does exactly what flowroute aims to do: give you a precise, data-driven recommendation for the single best time to leave — not just "traffic is bad," but "leave at 5:37 PM for a 34-minute trip instead of 51."
So why doesn't this type of tool already exist?
Maybe people won't pay for it.
Maybe the market isn't there.
Maybe previous attempts failed for reasons I haven't discovered yet.
But something about that logic didn't sit right with me.
Validating Demand Before Building
Instead of rushing straight into full app development, I'm taking a more deliberate approach.
The first priority is understanding whether people are actively looking for a solution like this.
My plan is simple but effective:
1. Drive targeted traffic to the flowroute website
2. Track how visitors behave — how many come, how they explore, how long they stay, and whether they engage with the prototype
3. Let real user interest guide the next decision
If the website sees strong engagement — people clicking around, trying the tool, coming back — then we'll move quickly to build the mobile app.
Of course, building the app wouldn't be extremely difficult from a technical standpoint. But I want to avoid the classic founder mistake of building something in isolation and hoping people will come.
Better to let real behavior tell us whether the demand is truly there.
The Mindset Behind the Decision
This isn't about being overly cautious. It's about being smart.
Traffic optimization is a real pain point for millions of commuters. If we can prove that people are actively seeking a better way, then investing in a polished mobile experience makes perfect sense.
If the interest isn't there yet, we'll learn that early and adjust.
Either way, we're building with data — not just assumptions.
What's Happening Right Now
The prototype continues to improve. The underlying calculations are getting more accurate. And we're starting to gather initial feedback from real test users.
The journey from that first frustrated observation out the office window to a working tool has been faster than expected. Now the focus shifts to validation and smart growth.
flowroute isn't just another traffic app. It's an attempt to solve a daily problem with the simplest, most effective lever available: perfect timing.
Stay Tuned
The next few weeks will be telling. Will commuters respond to a tool that promises to save them real time every single day?
We'll let the numbers speak for themselves.
